Description
Step into the rich, rhythmic crossroads of cultures with this immersive concert experience exploring the Afro-Latin influences that have shaped jazz from its earliest days to the present. Led by award-winning pianist Dr. Zachary Bartholomew, this performance celebrates the vibrant fusion of jazz with Caribbean, Spanish, and South American musical traditions, a sound famously described by Jelly Roll Morton as the “Spanish Tinge.” From the habanera rhythms of early New Orleans jazz to the deep grooves of Afro-Cuban jazz and beyond, this program showcases music by trailblazing artists such as Dizzy Gillespie, Chano Pozo, Jelly Roll Morton, Mario Bauzá, and more.
The concert also features original compositions by Bartholomew, inspired by this rhythmic heritage and reimagined through a modern jazz lens—bridging continents, generations, and styles.
